Community - A Flyer's Life

The Poetry of Flying

One of our dedicated students, Jen Englert, wrote this poem about the trapeze experience:

It's that first step up the ladder,
the precarious balance between having something solid beneath your feet and being in midair.
The slap of the net, the concrete just feet below.

You are dynamic incarnate.
Airborne with the breeze in your hair and the air in your fingers.

It's all about letting go-
Of your fears, of your inhibitions, of the bar-
Trust is a given, form is learned.

Being of sound mind and fluid body,
the sport of it is intense poetry.
Where stanzas are positions
Coordinates of your body-

And the rhyming of a catch perfectly timed-
You, the flyer, mirror the catcher until the glass is broken and you become one-

A solid line –a pendulum of humanity-
You break and become yourself again.
If only until your next time up the ladder.
